Tel Aviv (dpa), 10 Sept, 2020 -
Israel’s coronavirus cabinet met on Thursday, with a nationwide lockdown on the cards as the number of daily infections continued to climb towards 4,000.

The Health Ministry reported on Thursday that there had been 3,951 new confirmed cases of coronavirus the previous day.

For the third day in a row, this was the highest one-day figure in the country since the outbreak of the pandemic.
The number of tests taken was also significantly higher than before, with 44,717 conducted on Wednesday.

The ministers in the coronavirus cabinet were discussing new restrictions as citizens remained uncertain as to whether they will be permitted to celebrate with their extended families the Jewish new year, Rosh Hashana, which begins next Friday and is followed by additional religious holidays.

Health Minister Yuli Edelstein told Israeli news site Ynet earlier Thursday that he supported a full lockdown during the holidays.
