Washington/Seoul (dpa),Jun 1 2018  - Kim Jong Un’s right-hand man, Kim Yong Chol, plans to travel to Washington on Friday to hand deliver a personal letter from the North Korean leader to US President Donald Trump.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with Kim Yong Chol, former spy chief turned top negotiator, in New York on Wednesday and Thursday, in an attempt to salvage the planned summit in Singapore that Trump had previously called off.

Pompeo said following the talks with Kim that “real progress” had been made, but he still wasn’t sure if the June 12 summit between Trump and Kim Jong Un would take place.

Trump called off the summit in a letter to Kim Jong Un last week, citing “open hostility” from North Korea, but almost immediately backtracked by saying that efforts are ongoing to keep the original date.   The White House said on Wednesday that preparations for the summit were ongoing despite Trump’s official cancellation.
