Treaty banning nuclear weapons to enter into force

UNITED NATIONS AFP Oct25, 2020- Guterres called it “the culmination of a worldwide movement to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons,” according to a statement from his spokesman on Saturday.   


 “It represents a meaningful commitment towards the total elimination of nuclear weapons, which remains the highest disarmament priority of the United Nations.” NGOs also welcomed the news, including the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), a coalition that won the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize for its key role in bringing the treaty to fruition.   


 

 

Climate targets unachievable without nuclear power: IAEA chief 

Vienna (dpa), 25 Oct, 2020 - Reducing carbon dioxide emissions to keep global warming below 2 degrees will be all but impossible without nuclear power plants, says International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Rafael Grossi.


“The scientific fact is that nuclear is an extremely low emitter of CO2 emissions,” he said. “It is an empirical fact that one-third of clean energy is from nuclear origin.”
