Truckers block road in protest against police

Sargodha, (Dawn) - The truck drivers blocked the Sargodha-Faisalabad road in protest against the highway patrol police for torturing a truck driver for refusing to pay bribe.

Driver Ghulam Shabbir and his brother Shoaib were allegedly tortured also by the patrol police.

Shabbir claimed that he was carrying approved load, fulfilling all legal requisites but despite that the police demanded a Rs500 bribe. When he refused to pay the amount, police tortured him and his brother.

During the protest, the truck drivers said the patrol police were collecting Rs500 bribe from each truck on the pretext of extra load of crushed stone and they would torture and arrest the drivers who won’t pay them bribe.

There was a long queue of all types of vehicles on the Sargodha-Faisalabad road that remained blocked for several hours.

CONVICT: Additional District and Sessions Judge Mian Shahid Javed sentenced a man to 25 years rigorous imprisonment and Rs500,000 for raping a married woman at Dera Kawanwala in the area of Jhawrian Police Station.

The convict, Asif, had raped the woman in the fields when she was returning home. Police had registered case on report of the survivor’s husband and arrested the rapist. The medical report had confirmed the rape.

While pronouncing the verdict, the judge said the convict would have to pay Rs0.5m to the survivor and a fine of Rs100,000 to the exchequer.

ENCOUNTER: A suspect was shot and arrested after an encounter with Kot Momin police in Sargodha. He was identified as Sanaullah.

Police claimed that they tried to stop three persons riding a motorcycle for routine checking but the suspects escaped. When the officers chased them, the suspects left the motorcycle on the road, entered the nearby crop and opened fire at the police.

Crossfire started between them and the policemen and at its end, Sanaullah was found injured.

Police claimed that the suspect was wanted in seven cases.

BOOKED: A fake woman police officer was arrested in Sahiwal town.

Lady Constable Sameera Parveen was absent from duty and instead of her a woman, Aqsa Fayaz, was doing duty in police uniform.

Police arrested her and registered a case against both the women.

DRUGS SEIZED: Police seized 80kg of hashish and 30kg of opium from a car.

Shah Nikdar police noticed a speeding car Chak 164-NB Mor on Sargodha-Sillanwali road and chased it. The car crashed into a tree during the chase but the car occupants fled.

Police found the identity card of the suspect from the car. Shah Nikdar police registered a case.
