I am baffled by the disgusting way the majority behave when it comes to disposing of any form of garbage. We are all guilty if we do not care to responsibly dispose of anything, unless we are disabled or are small children who are yet unable to pick up after themselves. Even then, the grown ups around such children or disabled persons should pick up after them and get rid of their garbage in a responsible manner.
My neighbour, who is over ninety years old, had her second vaccine at one of the centres last week. The first thing she observed at the centre was how most of the people happily took off the swab of cotton wool that had been placed on their arm after the jab and flung it on the ground on the way out. There had been many dustbins in the vicinity but they could not be bothered going up to them. With the pandemic and many wearing disposable masks it is found that these too are just flung about all over the place.
Weekly, we used to see, and even occasionally now, the Forces plus volunteers cleaning up beaches, playgrounds and other places. This practise should stop because of the number of people who are yet happy to toss out their tetra packs, plastic bottles, polythene bags, cans and other similar items without a care. They continue to fling all this stuff and more wherever they feel like.
A fine for irresponsible disposal must be imposed or else this will never end. Our lovely Paradise Isle will be one blob of garbage and not the tourist attraction that we are desperately pursuing to be.
Living in Wellawatte, I cringe each time I see the canal, where the water, or is it sludge, is black in colour, with all sorts of bits and bobs of polythene and similar stuff floating in it. There are people dredging this disgusting garbage out of the filthy polluted waters on a regular basis and it seems to be an exhaustive and thankless task.
The irresponsible disposal of garbage is an unending problem, when I see that the majority amongst us are not interested in cleaning up after ourselves. I fear the hygienic standards in their own homes. A fine for irresponsible disposal must be imposed or else this will never end. Our lovely Paradise Isle will be one blob of garbage and not the tourist attraction that we are desperately pursuing to be.
