It is unimaginable how our lives have changed in a matter of months. With the pandemic spreading wildly in the Western Province, and more so in Colombo according to the Mayor and PHIs, it is quite unnerving.
Covid fatigue has got to many, especially at this time of the year when generally everybody is in good spirits owing to the celebration to come and the dawning of the new year. Last year at this time all were expecting an amazing year with it being a double digit only to face the horror of the pandemic that has spread throughout the world.
Nevertheless, life must continue as normal as possible and great care must be taken on how to safeguard oneself. The younger generation who yet think that they are not susceptible to this virus go out and enjoy themselves, whilst the more senior lot have intimate get togethers, maintaining physical distancing as much as possible.
It is nice to notice how some peoples’ attitudes have changed. Meals served at homes are simpler but delicious and the menus well thought out, either cooked by the host or hostess, and reminds me of my youth when dinner parties were only had at home. Some order from food outlets that are aplenty. It is all homely where everyone helps themselves and there is only the help at home as no one wishes to employ service staff due to the fear of the virus. The conversations also concentrate mostly on tales of the good old times and days people have had.
It is also a refreshing change not to be bombarded on the many media platforms of people showing off their designer wear and accessories, competing with one another and bragging about their new purchases of a fancy new designer bag or pair of shoes as there are no suitable places for people to parade them anymore.
The financial strain is felt by many. People are feeling more charitable and helping the less fortunate even though some yet feel a form of recognition is required of their good deeds and insert such pictures on a social platform. Right now, even that seems acceptable as so many are in dire need. Sombre and settled are the majority forced into this new lifestyle and hopefully it will remain when this pandemic finally comes to an end and not change back to what it was pre pandemic.
