The late Herbert Cooray, was a visionary and a pioneer in tourism. As far back as the early seventies, he bought the Blue Oceanic Hotel in Negombo and renamed it. Later on when the government headed by the late President Jayewardene swept into power, he was one of the first to go into the hotel industry in a big way which was later developed into the Jetwing Group. He played a significant, prominent role in the development of tourism for the sake of his country and its progress, and was always available for advice to others in this field and to the government at that time. He was educated at St Benedict’s College and at St Joseph’s and later at the Universities of Colombo and Peradeniya. He was known as a kind, sincere, person, always reaching out to others in any way he could. He loved to sing, which talent he has passed on to Gehan, his grandson. His daughter Shiromal has inherited his commitment, dedication, kindness, simplicity and courtesy. He must be glad that his pride and belief in her have been truly fulfilled.
