The AWPA runs two shelters in Dehiwela and Kahathuduwa, and its gates have long been a notorious spot for abandoning and rescuing street pups and kittens. However, it has been a long time since they have had so many pups in one go!

Nine beautiful black and white pups were abandoned at their gate in a rigiform box covered with a carpet, possibly under the cover of night. Two pups had crawled out of the box and had fallen into a drain. Luckily, a staff member managed to find them early in the morning and brought them to the safety of the shelter.
The five brown pups from Katharagama came through a pilgrim who couldn’t bear to leave them on the street, tied up in a gunny bag, sickly, ridden with mange and on the verge of collapse. Through an appeal for support, they received donations of medication and goat milk, which, along with much love and care, has helped them blossom into shiny beauties!
Lucky, was picked up by a shelter volunteer from a busy street in Galle. She had clearly been abandoned, was totally confused and about to be run over by speeding cars. The volunteer called  and cried until they accepted the puppy to the shelter.

All these pups have been lovingly cleaned, bathed, de-ticked, de-wormed, nourished and fed by  shelter staff and volunteers. Over the course of the last two months, they have developed into loving, beautiful and fluffy balls, who will make faithful companions in any home, and bring much happiness and joy.

Adopting these puppies will literally save their lives. With so many people working from home or being locked down at home, it is now the perfect time to adopt a dog! They also make wonderful companions, are proven to cure depression and anxiety and boost confidence.

In addition, unlike pedigreed dogs, cross bred dogs are very easy maintenance, rarely get ill and are excellent watch dogs. The only thing better in life than owning a dog, is owning two! So please consider taking in two puppies, unless you already have one. It is glorious to watch dogs interact with each other, and two pups are much less work than one, as they look after each other and tire each other out.
