Being Judgemental

Oh! Colombo is full of the Judgmental. They can easily be spotted at any function or event since you will see them scanning those around them with those deep staring eyes and no smile. They cannot bear to see people happy in any way, whether it be people having a jolly time hanging out with others or looking happy in themselves.  The Judgemental are miserable people who must be avoided at all costs.

I remember meeting Loveless many years ago. At that time, her biggest grouse was with those who were in a relationship. All Loveless did was find fault with the person in the relationship who was unknown to her. Just going on and on. It is very tiring and quite unpleasant to put up with such persons.

The other evening at Trixie’s dinner, to my surprise, I met Ms Loveless after ages.  She had met a partner of sorts, I thought, and must be in a happier state of mind. Nevertheless, I managed to avoid her and enjoyed myself with the cocktails and canapes that were being served around. When invited to sit for dinner, I had the great misfortune of having to sit next to her. The host had made a table plan and I could not rudely sit elsewhere. Since it was December, the month of joy, celebration and happiness, I decided I would be polite to Loveless and hoped that she had changed in her ways. How mistaken was I.

As soon as she seated herself, Loveless made a snide remark about the cocktails and  the number of canapes served ... I then knew that I was in for the most awful dinner seated next to this whinger.

As soon as she seated herself, Loveless made a snide remark about the cocktails, stating that they were too strong, and remarking that the number of canapes served around should have not been that many since she would not be able to enjoy her dinner. I then knew that I was in for the most awful dinner seated next to this whinger. Loveless had put on a great deal of weight; it was obvious that she had been tucking into goodies during the lockdowns. That did not stop her though.  She gave me one look and said that I should really think of losing some weight and gave me some tips on what I should be doing about it. Thereafter she proceeded to comment on everyone at the table, apart from Trixie, as this was a rare event when she got an invite. Loveless is so unpleasant that no one invites her. This invitation came to her as she was Trixie’s niece and Trixie puts up with her once a year. Loveless continued to be critical about everything and everyone throughout the meal, condemning the people and how awful they were, the food and the wine. When the Christmas pudding was served, she had the audacity to tell the lady seated opposite her not to serve herself so much since she had diabetes and, in fact, she should not be eating any of it. If there was a murder that night there would have been no guessing who the victim would have been.

Loveless is not the only person amongst us who is Judgemental. There are many. Their common trait is being over critical about everything, showing no respect for the persons they criticise, justifying every statement they make and believing that airing their true thoughts is how it should be. It is said that people become judgemental due to their own ego and pride, because of their hurt and anger at the experience of being wronged and lack of love and respect for others. The idea is to avoid such horrid creatures whenever possible and continue with our lives and enjoy every moment.
