The CGI-heavy movie Cats looks set to lose upward of $100million for makers Universal, after dismal takings at the box office. It comes after the much maligned star-studded CGI movie dropped to eighth place at the U.S. box office with $4.8million.

Internationally Tom Hooper's big-screen adaptation has taken just $38million after two weeks in theatres.  The dismal figure could result in $100 million in theatrical losses, rival studio executives told Variety.com. Deadline reports that if Cats doesn't reach at least $100 million worldwide ($40 million domestic, $60 million abroad), which appears unlikely after the first two weeks, it will lose at least $71 million. Those figures are based on the estimated $90 million budget plus a global publicity and advertising spend of roughly $115 million.
Variety estimates a $100 million budget and $95 million to $100 million for global marketing and distribution fees. Adding to damages, Universal issued new prints of the movie to exhibitors with improved visuals during opening weekend.

Meanwhile Disney and LucasFilm's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker continued its dominance at the box office for a second straight weekend with $72 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
