A renown art education institute the Cora Abraham Art Classes marked an important milestone as they celebrated their  75th anniversary in May 2024. In commemoration of  this they have organised an art  exhibition from October 11 -13  at the J D A Perera Gallery, Horton Place, Colombo 07.

We had a chat with the Principal  I.W. Wckramaratne.

Q: As the Cora Abraham Art Classes 75th anniversary   celebrations approach what are the events you have planned to commemorate this milestone?

Handmade calendars were designed and created by each student for 2024. An original picture was attached to  each page of the calendars which was the unique feature of it.

Q: Can you tell us about the exhibition that is planned for this event?
Exhibition dates: 11 th Friday to 13 th Sunday, October 2024

Venue: J D A Perera Gallery, Horton Place, Colombo 07
Q: Who are the main participants at this exhibition, and what do their ages range from?
The present students of the art class range from 4 to 15 years.

Q: What is the main purpose of having this exhibition?
To present the work of our students displaying their creativity that results from providing freedom of expression without adult interference.

Q: Can you tell us a little about the history of the school and its founder?
The Cora Abraham Art Classes were established in 1949 as the Melbourne Art Classes (on Melbourne Avenue Colombo 4) by a pioneer teacher of education through art, the late Cora Abraham together with Art Teacher Sita Kulasekera.  They were soon joined by Richard Gabriel , a founder member of the ’43 group.

Q: Also please tell us about the motto of the school and what it entails.
No motto. Come to us happily and enjoy yourselves because we provide a totally free atmosphere.
No marking grades, no prizes and no competitions.

Q: How has the school progressed over the years and how is it different to other schools of art?
We aim to provide a free atmosphere for each child to develop at his/her own pace.

We also provide the materials.

Q: Finally what are your future plans for the school?
Continue the vision of our charismatic founder the late Cora Abraham who was guided by the theories of British educator, Sir Herbert Read, and got excellent results. Several generations from one family!
