Zonta Club II Colombo, is a member of Zonta International a global organisation of women executives and professionals, celebrating 100 years of service and advocacy in 2019. Club II of Colombo charted in 1994 has successfully provided medical, educational and leadership programmes to less privileged and abused women, children and encourage youth leaders in our Society.
This biennium the club has drawn-up a series of well thought-out assistance programmes towards empowerment of women and children. The club currently focuses its efforts on a number of projects primarily focusing on Mithuru Piyasa counselling centers set up to provide counselling and guidance to women and children from abused backgrounds. They currently maintain and support 4 counselling centres with a monthly average reach of in excess of 2,000 victims. The centers further conduct seminars for men and women on gender based violence as we believe education and building awareness are the most effective ways in overcoming domestic and other gender based violence. This has been a flag-ship project of our Club for the past few years and we are committed to opening 2 more during this calendar year thus reaching a wider group of victims.
Another project handled by them is the Breast Cushion for women recovering from Breast Cancer Surgery – designed in Australia this simple economical devise assists the patient to handle the pain and discomfort of post-surgery. These cushions are being distributed free of charge to many deserving patients. Zonta Club II is also involved in projects such as skill building of Maths teachers by conducting Maths workshops and offering scholarships to a number of students from Moratuwa area leading upto the O/Level examination.
With the intention of raising funds for their many ongoing projects, the club has planned an evening of entertainment, FAB FEB, a Valentine’s Day celebration with a twist. The event will be held on 14th of February 2020 at The Stables, Park Street Mews, Colombo from 8 pm onwards. There will be DJ music from 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and current to suit the dancing needs of allthe guests. Further there will be street food stalls where you could purchase nibbles and dinner at reasonable prices. They have also negotiated with the Mews for this to be a BYOB event.
