Grindlays Regency

Ambepussa, located strategically at a central point along the main travel routes between Colombo, Kandy and Kurunegala, has long been a popular stopover for long-distance travellers due to its convenient location.  Recently, however, the area extending from Ambepussa to Alawwa, particularly along the Ma-Oya and Kuda Oya, has emerged as a spot for adventure and nature tourism. This region, with its lush greenery, rolling hills, and tranquil rivers, offers a variety of activities such as hiking, bird-watching, river trekking, and camping. The natural beauty and serene atmosphere have attracted both domestic travellers and international tourists seeking a retreat into nature and a taste of Sri Lankan landscapes.

A number of new properties have been developed along the banks of Kuda Oya, transforming Alawwa into a sought-after destinations in the northern part of the Kegalle District.

In 2012, Chairman/MD Darshana Liyanasekara of Grindlays Regency Hotel Ltd identified an opportunity for a hospitality venture in Alawwa. He noticed that many tourists, corporate guests from the IPZ and especially couples, were in search of a suitable venue for their events or a comfortable place to stay, but often had to travel to the next city to meet their needs. Recognising this gap, they set out to develop a local solution, which led to the establishment of a business that caters to these specific demands in the heart of Alawwa.

Begun as a modest six-room hotel in 2013, ‘Grindlays Regency Hotel’ has grown into a property, now featuring 17 well-appointed rooms, including one exclusive suite and four deluxe triple rooms. The hotel also offers two spacious banquet halls, Sapphire and Crystal, each accommodating up to 350 guests, making it an ideal venue for weddings and other corporate events. Additional facilities include a Conference Centre, a rooftop open-air area, and a large swimming pool.

All rooms are elegantly designed, providing a sophisticated ambience where guests can relax and unwind. Each room is equipped with modern amenities such as cable TV, free Wi-Fi, IDD telephone services, tea/coffee making facilities, and modern en-suite bathrooms. Every room also features a private balcony offering stunning views of either the garden or the surrounding mountains, enhancing the tranquil experience for guests on holiday with family or friends.

‘It is just 700 metres from Alawwa town, where guests can arrive at the Grindlays Regency just under 90 minutes from Colombo. BOI Mirigama and Katunayake are just 30 minutes’ drive from the hotel, where most of our corporate clientele come from’ said Liyanasekera.

The Grindlays Regency Hotel takes great pride in its gourmet cuisine, crafted by a highly experienced team of chefs led by Executive Chef Indika Kumara. The hotel’s food is a favourite among guests, families and other corporate visitors.

‘Food is one of our main driving forces,’ said Darshana Liyanasekara. ‘We receive many compliments about our cuisine, which range from simple, authentic village meals to five-star dining experiences. Our Executive Chef, who previously worked in five star properties in Colombo and Ceylon Hotel School, brings versatility to the table, especially with his expertise in traditional Sri Lankan cuisine. This diverse culinary offering has become a standout feature for both local and visiting guests’ Darshana added.

The Grindlays Regency Hotel has become one of the most sought-after wedding destinations in the Alawwa/Ambepussa area. 

The newly built Lake Restaurant by the waters of Kuda Oya, featuring a live kitchen, is quickly gaining popularity for private parties, corporate events, and family outings, according to Manager Chanaka Jayawardena. ‘We are well-known for romantic weddings, corporate functions, day outings, and private parties. Our two banquet halls can accommodate a total of 700 guests’, he added.

In addition to its facilities and culinary delights, Grindlays Regency offers adventure activities such as archery, air rifle shooting, and water sports for more adventurous guests.

Grindlays Regency’s excellence in hospitality was recognized with the SLIM 2020 Brand Excellence – SME Bronze Award for its performance in the Sabaragamuwa District. Established eight years ago as a boutique hotel registered with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), the hotel has consistently delivered great service and memorable experiences.
