Life is one thing we do not question, especially when growing up. Most people we know have grown up in comfortable homes and have had a fair education.   It is later on in life, when growing older and facing problems and becoming aware of mortality that makes one begin to wonder what life is all about.

One thing that we are all sure of is death.  Most else could be controlled by us.  I am sure that all of us at some stage wonder why we are leading the life we do instead of another.  All religions offer various answers to this question, with the Christians believing in immortal souls and the Hindus and Buddhists believing in the cycles of rebirth, for instance.  However, being born is a fact that cannot be explained but accepted by all.

Life has both its ups and downs.  A common myth however is that happiness is based on the quantity and quality of these ups and downs. Good and bad things happen to all of us.  Watching the local and international news gives you an idea mostly of the horrifying things happening around us.  We choose to carry on with our lives ignoring these horrors on the premise that we cannot do anything about them.

The poverty we see around us is unbearably sad too.  In this case we could choose to help in different ways when possible.  Then again you hear the selfish beings around us, who are living in luxury and comfort, whining about the interest rate being cut and how their massive monthly income is slashed. These types do not care about how the less fortunate live.  At such times it seems that the less fortunate are the happier ones because they do not grumble about their lives and have no interest rate to worry about and are grateful to have a meal a day.
Throughout our lives we hear of wars, hatred, rape, harassment, bragging, thievery, cheats, all types of unimaginable abuse and terrible illnesses. The list is endless.   The hatred, anger and envy around us are unbelievable and many who witness other people's happiness are secretly envious of them.  What most of us do not seem to realise is that all this one day just winds down to death and none of this matter anymore.

The individuals who are most happy are the ones who manage life with both ease and equanimity. We should all try to keep our balance and attempt to help and empower people
in need, as in this life nothing really matters.
