With movie theaters around the world slowly starting to re-open, one of last year’s critically-acclaimed hits is about to pass a new box office milestone.
Little Women, the adaptation of Louisa May-Alcott's beloved novel, is getting close to the $100 million milestone at the international box office.
The film, written and directed by Greta Gerwig, earned an additional $760,000 from 13 foreign markets this past weekend, according to Variety, putting its foreign total at $99.5 million thus far.
A large percentage of the $760,000 weekend gross comes from Japan, where the drama debuted to $495,000. The film also earned $255,000 in Denmark, marking a 15% decrease from the previous weekend's gross in the country.
The film earned a respectable $108.1 million in its domestic theatrical run in North America, opening on Christmas Day.
However, the film was supposed to start rolling out in several international markets in January, though that didn't happen since many markets were closed to stop the spread of COVID-19.
Most movie studios aren't even reporting box office grosses because so few theaters, many of them drive-in theaters, are open, and those that are open are playing older movies to their customers like The Greatest Showman and Harry Potter.
Movie theaters in Beijing were supposed to open this week, but those plans were scrapped when three new COVID-19 cases were discovered.
