Last week in ‘Life Travel’ we featured Sri Lanka’s only ‘LEED PLATINUM’ status certified hotel and first sustainable ecofriendly hotel project ‘Rainforest Ecolodge’ bordering the Sinharaja Forest. ‘The Rainforest Ecolodge’ offers a unique adventure experience for explorers and adventure travellers. Being located within the buffer zone of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Rainforest Ecolodge offers a unique opportunity to experience endemic animals and biodiversity at its highest.

Apart from accommodation, cuisine and other designated hospitality facilities, ‘The Rainforest Ecolodge’ is considered as the main base for scientific exploration into the Sinharaja Forest. Sinharaja Forest is the main focus and attraction to travellers visiting the hotel.
‘The Rainforest Ecolodge’ provides a range of excursions and trekking designed specially for adventure travellers to experience the region’s extraordinary biodiversity. Bird Watching, Waterfall Treks Nature Trails and Night Treks are the main four hiking tours offered by the hotel.
A range of specially designed trekking routes are made available to guests, varied by altitude, direction and the clusters of wildlife found in each area.
‘Guests can select a trek of their choice and time of the day. Two or three trekking experiences in the morning, evening and mid-day can be arranged according to the individual’s time frame and their likings. Trails include the main and arboretum trails and the basic, adventure and night walks. 'Guests can take a trek through the quaint paths of Sinharaja, where placid undergrowth lie in wait for the appreciation of all who wish to indulge in the tranquil wilderness of Sri Lanka’s world renowned rainforest’ explained the hotel's naturalist Jagath, who leads the way into the forest.
The trekkers should keep in mind that leeches are unavoidable; although they can bite, they are usually harmless. The hotel provides ‘leech socks’ but shoes and socks have to be removed, when crossing streams and waterways. ‘Leech socks’ and rain coats are provided by the hotel, where rain and shine goes hand in hand in this rainforest.
The Bird Watching trek is one of the popular treks and easy to complete mostly on flat terrain. The excursion begins at 6.30 am. daily. Guests can capture a one-of-a-kind photo opportunity to witness the breathtaking phenomenon of Flock Feeding, where various bird species gather to feed together. They may spot iconic species such as the Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, Black Drongo (black drongo is a small Asian passerine bird of the drongo family Dicruridae), and the elusive Sri Lanka Scimitar Babbler, showcasing the vibrant life within this enchanting forest. Each activity is thoughtfully curated to enhance the connection between visitors and the rich natural environment surrounding the Ecolodge. The Blue Magpie is the inspiration behind ‘The Rainforest Eco Lodge logo’. The trail spans 4.2 kilometres, promising an immersive adventure amidst lush greenery and melodious bird calls.

Waterfall Trekking is more adventurous and exciting with uphill, slopes, boulders and streams. Embark on a fascinating hike to discover two unique waterfalls — Kollawa Dola Ella and Pitamangala Dolla Ella. While experiencing the biodiversity at its highest, travellers can enjoy a relaxing experience of natural fish therapy absolutely free in the small natural pool, home to the ‘Ceylon Stone Sucker’, an endemic species found only in Sri Lankan streams. The ‘Ceylon Stone Sucker’ creates a blissful sensation as dozens of gentle, toothless fish — known as ‘doctor’ or nibble fish tenderly massage feet, delicately removing dry and dead skin.
Guests can discover other endemic species of freshwater fish and Sri Lankan freshwater crabs, exclusively native to the Sinharaja. This trek can be chosen between a morning excursion at 10.00am or an afternoon adventure at 3 pm, spanning two kilometres. This sanctuary is a serene spot for meditation, too.
Nature Trails is experiencing scenery, biodiversity and of course rare endemic animals. There is much endemic wildlife, especially birds, but the reserve is also home to over 50% of Sri Lanka's endemic species of mammals and butterflies, as well as many kinds of insects, reptiles and rare amphibians. More than 60% of the trees are endemic and many of them are considered rare. Endemic purple-faced Langur, Sri Lanka wood pigeon, green-billed Coucal are a few who call it home.
‘Discover nature trails tailored for discerning travellers seeking to immerse themselves in the breathtaking scenery and diverse ecosystem of the rainforest. Remember, observing them is free, but it is crucial to exercise caution and refrain from causing harm or disturbance. To fully enjoy the great outdoors, ensure that you are equipped with appropriate attire and footwear’ Jagath said.
The Night Trek is more exciting. Be part of an exhilarating Night Trail through the mystical forest, where rare sightings await. Encounter the elusive Loris, a rare primate, along with an array of nocturnal creatures including frogs, moths, geckos, and sleeping lizards as the forest comes alive under the cloak of darkness. Set out at 6:30pm on a trail spanning a 4.2 kilometer round trip.
Bigger adventure excursions too are available if travellers are keen to take part in the five hour Rainforest Eco Lodge excursion.
‘After breakfast, trek to the temples of Kolawenigama and Gatabaruwa over a distance of 75km, stopping at waterfalls on the way. This takes approximately five hours, but does promise spectacular views and unforgettable experiences in the rich Sinharaja Rainforest’ he added.
