will return as superhero parents in upcoming Netflix film... We Can Be Heroes
We Can Be Heroes is listed as 'Completed' on its IMDb page, but there's no information yet on when it will release on the Netflix streaming platform
Fans of 2005’s cult adventure film The Adventures Of Sharkboy And Lavagirl In 3-D are in for a treat. On Tuesday, it was announced during a remote Collider Comic Con panel that director Robert Rodriguez is returning to the world of those superhero characters, with the recently completed We Can Be Heroes for Netflix.
What’s more, the eponymous heroes, played back then by Twilight’s Taylor Lautner as well as Taylor Dooley, will be parents in the new film, sharing a Sharkboy-Lavagirl offspring who’s sure to have some interesting powers all her own.
The plot of the new movie centers around children of various superheroes who must join forces after alien invaders kidnap their parents, including Sharkboy and Lavagirl’s daughter.
Rodriguez, 52, is known for helming From Dusk Till Dawn, Sin City and Spy Kids, and he’s listed as director, writer and cinematographer for this new project. And while Dooley has confirmed she’ll be returning to portray the adult Lavagirl, Lautner has yet to say whether he’ll be back to play a grownup Sharkboy. Other notable players in the film are Priyanka Chopra, Christian Slater and Pedro Pascal – the latter of The Mandalorian fame. According to Rodriguez, Pascal will be playing an ‘Antonio Banderas–type role,’ which presumably means a character akin to the one Banderas played in his breakout 1995 hit Desperado, also directed by Rodriguez.

A concept to that of We Can Be Heroes has been mined in Disney’s successful Descendants franchise, which explores the lives of the progeny of famous Disney heroes and villains.
That franchise has spawned two sequels, most recently 2019’s Descendants 3 co-starring the late Cameron Boyce. Lavagirl and Sharkboy aren’t the only iconic movie characters Rodriguez is slated to be revisiting.
According to the Texas-born director’s IMDb page, he’s also set to take on Machete Kills In Space, which looks to be a somewhat cheeky followup to the Danny Trejo-starring shoot-em-up from 2013.
