Stalking Social Media

Trixie was delighted that many social events had sprung up in Colombo. Even though she does not go out to where there are huge gatherings despite having had her first jab, she has a wonderful time looking at the photographs of the events, which are in plenty on the social platform. Her nephew had been kind enough to set up Facebook, Instagram and all the newspapers online for her and Trixie is enjoying her time at home looking at the goings on in Colombo. Last week was special as it was Colombo Fashion Week.  As could be expected, many photographs had been uploaded on social media.  Trixie, per se, was not bothered about the Designers, especially after her friend Steffina had pointed out to her that many of the Designers had been gutsy enough to copy international Designers and with no shame stating that it was an original design by them.

The number of people clamouring to attend this fashion fiesta were many.  At the event it is easy to notice the women longing for the Fashion TV to walk across to them and inquire which Designer’s ensemble they are wearing, including their accessories. These few seconds of fame seem to mean so much to the empty lives some of them  lead. It was delightful, Trixie said, to listen to them, especially when she was aware that some were gleefully lying through their teeth about being in international designer ensembles when what could be seen was badly stitched copies with threads hanging and frayed hem lines and other spottable faults. Most sad were the size twelve figures who had squeezed into a size eight outfit after wearing body suits and corsets. The handbags and shoes, some of them fakes purchased from the Pratunam Market in Bangkok or from China, had also passed their wear by date as no one had been able to travel to these destinations to replace their imitation designer bags, shoes etc. As for most of the outfits, the range could be compared to birds of paradise and to animals roaming around in the jungle.  Trixie commented that they must be having some amazing mirrors in their homes and their confidence and guts to even step out of their homes dressed and looking so embarrassingly ghastly.

Nevertheless, the clinking of wine glasses with most pretending that they were in some Parisian grand fashion show must have lifted the spirits of all these folks who are just bored sticking at home. Of course, there were many disappointed folks who were annoyed that they were not photographed or interviewed.  Not to be outdone they uploaded albums of photographs with theirs squads and cliques to show the Colombo lot that they were at this event. Watching all of this from afar made Trixie’s weekend one of great joy and amusement.
The desperation to be recognised and be a somebody in this town is quite amusing. Oh! Colombo what a wonderful place to live in.
