The Invitation

Social media, which most think is the best form of endorsment to their amazing lives and the biggest form of bragging, is quite the giveaway when some people are not spotted in the picture. 

The desire to belong is a fundamental part of human nature, according to psychologists, and when people feel out of place and their sense of belonging is threatened, that discomfort and self-doubt can have far-reaching effects.
Receiving an invitation to a function of any sort is a big deal among certain Colombo circles.  Largely to keep up with the Jones’s and particularly owing to the fear of missing out.
Human beings are essentially social animals that constantly crave belonging, connectivity and closeness. Hence, when we have a mission or maybe form a hobby, we love to share it with others. In Colombo it is mostly to brag.  When the circle meets most of the conversation is around who has been invited and where to. If any in the circle have not received an invite, they will make it a point to let everyone know that they were but could not make it. Weddings are events to which people like to be invited.  As soon as the event is over the critiquing and slander begins.  Rarely is a kind word said about the entire occasion. Funerals, too, have now become a social event.  Those who opt for a private funeral are not left in peace as there are people who crash them in order to brag that they were there and then relate to any listening ear about how they were greeted and treated with great appreciation for being there, which actually is untrue. 
The fear of missing out is huge in Colombo, equally balanced between the nouveau riche and the recently impoverished.  The latter yet trying to show that they are huge in the Colombo social circle.
