Unrealistic Prices

Whilst the country is rejoicing with the winning of the Asian netball and cricket games, its people are also wondering what prices will be soaring up of the necessary commodities. The basic prices of tinned fish, milk powder, lentils etc., are unreachable to many, which is quite sad. Earlier, people used to be happy to hand out dry food packages to the needy when the items could be purchased at a reasonable price. Today, those items cost almost five times the price paid a month ago. The losers are the recipients.

There are exclusive shops that still manage to bring down luxury items to the country, such as fresh peaches, nectarines, cherries, black truffles etc., which are sold at phenomenal prices. These items are obviously in demand and purchased by the monied, who are a mere percentage. A basket of these goodies cost a fortune and come close to a domestic aide’s wages for six months or a year. Most of those who happily spend such large amounts  are happy to brag about their fancy purchases.  They rarely bother to raise the wages of their staff and instead work them to the bone for a meagre salary.

Meagre wages are the main cause of the mass exodus from this country. Businesses are even being moved to nearby Middle Eastern countries which offer them great benefits in taxes. Caregivers, trained and qualified nurses, cooks, mechanics and people in many other fields of expertise are leaving our country for greener pastures. This is very visible, especially when the services provided by the local industries are no longer up to standard.

The top end tourist will be difficult to attract by marketing our enchanting island.  Poor attitudes, bad service, low quality food and soaring prices will not be acceptable to them. We are having loads of back packers visiting our island, enjoying the cheap hostels and home stays and eating at these kade cultures. All such experiences posted on social media platforms.

On the other hand, the restaurants in Colombo are packed with locals patronising them.  It is hoped that this trend will continue despite the bills at the end of a meal or drinking session being sky high.

Let us wish that something will be sorted out and prices of the basic necessities will come down and be affordable to all living in this country.
