Award-winning actor Chandika Nanayakkara said immediate initiatives must be taken to help professionals belonging to every sector in the country’s entertainment sphere which has been severely hit by the new coronavirus crisis.
“A large number of artistes, technicians and personnel linked to the country’s cinema, tele drama, theatre and music fields are are struggling to keep their home fires burning. This pandemic has cast a shadow on many behind-the-scene professionals who have contributed in script-writing, set design, make-up and lights too. There is a fraction among them who can survive and can weather the storm. I am one such person. I have other sources of income besides acting. But many are not so. Somebody or organisation must establish a proper mechanism to help these people who have enriched our arts and culture through their contributions. I know some whose electricity and water bills have accumulated over the months and are on the verge of such facilities being disconnected. This is in addition to their day-to-day needs,” said Chandika.
“Anyone or any firm coming forward must do it with a genuine intention. We can’t burden the government for such assistance at a time when the country is facing an economic crisis. If anyone volunteers, I am ready to contribute in whatever way I can. I already do it within my capacity. I know that there are others who will do so,” he said. (RU)
