Chinese ship on way to Sri Lanka

A fresh request has been made for the controversial Chinese ship ‘The Yuan Wang 5’ to be berthed in the Hambantota port on August 16 for replenishment, Daily Mirror learns .  


However, the Harbour-Master had not given clearance for entry into the port yesterday.    

The government initially postponed the port call by the ship following protests by the Indian authorities over security concerns. Sri Lanka has been placed in a precarious position being unable to strike a balance between China and India on this matter.  The Sri Lankan embassy in Beijing has briefed the government that the country will face dire economic consequences if the ship visit is not allowed.
