Further excavations at Kokkuthuduwai in Mullaitivu unearthed a host of skeletal remains and fragments of camouflaged materials believed to have been worn by women soldiers.

The excavations were carried out under the supervision of Mullaitivu Acting Magistrate R. Pradeepan and Dr. Vasudeva, the Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) from Mullaitivu General Hospital.

The initial finding of skeletal remains on June 29 during pipeline laying prompted an investigation by the Kokilai Police. Following a preliminary magisterial inquiry conducted by Mullaitivu Magistrate T. Saravanarajah, further excavations were ordered to shed light on the discovery.

The recovered fragments of cloth from the excavation site bear a striking resemblance to the uniforms worn by women soldiers, according to the police. This similarity has raised speculation about the possible connection between the skeletal remains and the presence of women soldiers in the area during past military conflicts.    Members of the Special Task Force (STF) Bomb Disposal Unit and archaeological officers were present, along with relatives of those who disappeared during military conflicts. Legal representatives, tasked with safeguarding the interests of the affected families, were also on hand to monitor the proceedings.
