Medical experts opine that Vitamin D helps to strengthen immunity and protect yourself against COVID-19. According to Consultant Family Physician Dr. Ruvaiz Haniffa, Sri Lankans are known to be Vitamin D insufficient.
“There are three levels, sufficient, insufficient and deficient. Around 80% of our females and 50% males have a Vitamin D insufficiency. Vitamin D helps to regulate the absorption of calcium and phosphorous while facilitating normal immune system function,” said Dr. Haniffa.
“However, recent studies have shown that Vitamin D 3 has an immunoprotective effect against viruses and in this case, the Coronavirus,” he added. “The common myth is to be exposed to sunlight during the early hours of the day, but nutritionists opine that you need to expose your skin to the sun at noon, say around 11.00am-12.00pm. This is when the sun shines above you. Vitamin D forms in your skin due to exposure to sunlight. Other ways of getting Vitamin D is by having a healthy diet or supplementation. But generally if the diet is good, that Vitamin D is sufficient for your body.” Dr. Haniffa said.
