The 120th Annual Josephian Prize-Giving was held successfully, on September 11, 2024, at the Rev. Dr. Stanley Abeysekera Auditorium cum Sports Complex. Rev. Fr. R.A.D.J. Sylvester Ranasinghe, the present Rector and Vice Chancellor of Aquinas College of Higher Studies, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Ranasinghe had also served as the 12th Rector of St. Joseph’s College.
The opening prayer was made by Rev. Fr. Ruwan Deshapriya, the Vice Rector. The much-awaited Josephian Annual Prize-Giving Report was read by Rev. Fr. Ranjith Andradi, the 14th Rector of St. Joseph’s College. During his speech Rev. Andradi covered many vital aspects on the topic ‘The Empowering Future Leaders with Innovation and Resilience’. The points he presented were appreciated by students, teachers and parents of the College and other invitees at the occasion.
As we navigate an era marked by unprecedented technological advancement, global interconnectedness and complex social and environmental challenges, the qualities that define successful leaders are evolving. The two key attributes standing out in this context are; innovation and resilience. Empowering future leaders with these qualities is not just a goal; they are necessary to build a sustainable, prosperous future.
He further emphasised on the ‘Essence of Innovation and Resilience’, ‘The Need for Promoting Innovation in Schools’, ‘The Importance of Innovation in Education’ among other importance subjects. By focusing on innovation and resilience in education, we can empower the next generation of leaders; equipping them with the skills and mindsets needed to navigate the complexities of the modern world and lead with purpose and integrity. As the speaker pointed out, these elements create a holistic educational environment where students can thrive on. They learn to embrace change, think outside the box, and approach problems with a solution-oriented mindset. This comprehensive approach to education not only prepares students for academic success, but also instills values of empathy, collaboration, and ethical leadership. By nurturing these qualities, we are building a foundation for a future where our students can confidently face uncertainties, drive positive change, and contribute meaningfully to society.
Fr. Andradi also appreciated the incredible resilience of the young Josephians. He pointed out that under the Pastoral guidance, they have navigated unprecedented challenges; particularly in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. In spite of these challenges, our students remained steadfast and demonstrating an unwavering commitment to their education. There were many challenges including external challenges that we had to face to make our position stronger in the educational sector, in Sri Lanka. They have shown their strength and perseverance. They have continued to pursue excellence, embodying the core values of determination and resilience that define our educational mission. This resilience reflects not only their individual character, but also the collective spirit of our school community—students, teachers, and parents—who have all contributed to navigating these turbulent times. As we move forward, it is crucial to recognise these efforts and to continue supporting our students in every possible way. Their ability to overcome adversity inspires us all and reaffirms our commitment to providing them with, regardless of the obstacles we face.
He also commended the invaluable service rendered by the Fathers of the college and the staff. He wished them to have a very successful and rewarding year filled with many success stories in academics, sports and extra-curricular activities. He also underscored that the College aims to create a culture of love, welcome, appreciation, freedom and accomplishments where students are geared to push their boundaries while enjoying their student life. The students who excelled in studies were recognised and awarded for their spectacular achievements. Priests and teachers who have completed their higher studies and the Silver Jubilarians in the teachers and Administrative and Clerical Staff categories were recognised as well.
A souvenir was published to mark this spectacular event. It was edited by Maruthai Ravindhiran.
