Goethe-Institut Sri Lanka organised a science workshop on September 27 which was attended by a group of schoolchildren who were very eager to learn. The objective of the event was to make the participants learn Science in an interesting way. The sessions ensured that the students engaged in interactive scientific experiments.
There were so many experiments done at this exhibition. The students enjoyed each single activity. The most interesting part of the workshop was that they were able to make a creation in 3D within a few minutes.
The workshop was conducted by German author and journalist Joachim Hecker. Speaking to the Daily Mirror, he mentioned that Science is a very interesting subject which everyone can learn using practical sessions.
“In schools Science is very theoretical. Science is the description of reality. This subject is very simple. The subject can be learned with the materials around us,” added Hecker.
Hecker stressed the fact that science isn’t a subject which has to be taught inside a classroom. He stated that this subject should be taught incorporating practical sessions. He emphasised on the importance of using this method to study because there is a huge difference between theory and practice.
“I think that it is very important that young people do their own research. Young people have plenty of time. In Germany, we have a competition for young people. In such competitions, they do their own research. And these competitions are held nationwide and they help young talent to grow,” added Hecker.
One of the participants at the workshop Himavi Thara Minhari, from Swarna Jayanthi National College Kegalle, shared her views about attending the workshop with this newspaper.
“This is the best workshop held so far because it is relevant to science. I wasn’t a very big fan of Science. But now I understand that Science is within everything that exists in this world. The educator who presented the workshop was really great,” added Himavi.
