Reginald Perera

Reginald Perera, the beloved and respected political leader from Wattala passed away recently.

Born May 22, 1947, Reggie’s life was shaped by his deep Catholic faith which guided both his public and private endeavours. His education at St. Mary’s College, Mabole and St. Anthony’s College, Wattala laid the foundation for a career marked by integrity, service and dedication to the community and his family.

Reggie’s political journey began in 1983 when he was elected Mayor of the Wattala- Mabole Urban Council through the United National Party. Faced with a council in disrepair, his leadership transformed it to proper functionality and earned him the respect of the people. His popularity was such that in 1987 the Wattala-Mabole U.C. was the only council in the country that elected a mayor uncontested. The support he received from the opposition councillors was a rare testament to Reggie’s non-partisan approach and commitment to public welfare.
In recognition of his accomplishments in local government, Reggie was appointed to Parliament in 1989 on the UNP’s national list, an honour seldom bestowed upon local government politicians. His hard and exceptional work ensured his being appointed the UNP organiser for the Mahara electorate in 1990 and Reggie’s transparent and honest leadership gained him admiration across party lines.

Not choosing to be an appointed MP, Reggie tested his popularity by contesting at the Parliamentary Election 1994 from the Gampaha District, which was re-affirmed when he was elected to Parliament with 73,508 votes.
Beyond politics, Reggie was a dedicated family man who balanced the demands of public life with his family life. His deep sense of duty to both his family and community was a defining trait as was his unwavering integrity.
Though Reggie is no longer with us, his legacy endures. He will be remembered not only as an honest, genuine politician who earned respect across the political divide but also as a man whose life was guided by love, faith, and service.

His memory will continue to inspire, reminding us of the power of integrity and commitment to the common good.
