Members of the Royal College Red Cross Society
Royal College Red Cross Society stands as a beacon of compassion and community service and leaves an indelible mark on healthcare through two transformative initiatives: The 44th Annual Blood Donation Campaign and Vision ‘23.
The Society’s Annual Blood Donation Campaign has become synonymous with unity and altruism. According to a release issued by the Royal College Red Cross Society the blood donation campaign which was held at diverse venues across the country attracted the participation of over 540 donors. From the District General Hospital in Hamantota to Royal College in Colombo, the campaign reached places far and wide, replenishing the National Blood Bank and ensuring a robust blood supply for emergencies.
The society’s ability to organise one of the largest school-led blood donation campaigns ever showcased its commitment to fostering a culture of giving. Students, faculty and community members joined forces, collectively making a significant impact on Sri Lanka’s healthcare system. Through these campaigns, the Royal College Red Cross Society not only saves lives directly, but also instills a sense of responsibility and community engagement among the younger generation.
Illuminating a path to eye health
Complementing their blood donation efforts, the society launched Vision 23, a comprehensive eye care initiative. The first phase saw an extensive eye check-up campaign benefiting over 1346 individuals. Trained doctors from the National Eye Hospital conducted the campaign thorough examinations, emphasising preventive measures and early detection of eye conditions.
The second phase, which was an eye donation programme, went beyond physical health; tapping into the community’s empathy. By registering 334 donors and encouraging individuals to pledge their eyes for donation, the society created a network dedicated to preventing avoidable blindness. Vision 23 doesn’t merely focus on diagnosing eye issues; it actively engages the community in building awareness and fostering a lasting culture of compassion.
As the Royal College Red Cross Society moves into the third phase of Vision 23, providing cataract surgeries and medication support, it exemplifies a holistic approach to community service. By addressing both immediate healthcare needs through blood donation campaigns and long-term well-being through Vision 23, the society reinforces its dedication to serving the community in multifaceted ways.
In the noble pursuit of saving lives and preserving vision, the Royal College Red Cross Society emerges as a dynamic force for positive change. Through blood and vision initiatives that were pioneered by the Chairman of the Royal College Red Cross Society - Nafees Salley, the society not only heals bodies, but also nurtures a spirit of empathy, compassion, and collective responsibility, embodying the true essence of community service.
