‘Sanjanana 2023’ by Royal College UNESCO Club concludes

The second edition of ‘Sanjanana 2023’ organized by the UNESCO Club of Royal College, Colombo was held at the Nawarangahala recently. Students showcased various cultural performances that highlighted Sri Lankan culture and arts. These included songs, dance items, and a stage play in Tamil that highlighted how Sri Lanka gained independence and why all citizens should unite as one, to name a few.

The Royal College UNESCO Club was established in 2007 with the contribution of the National UNESCO Association and was transformed into a student body in 2020. Its purpose is to serve the school and community through avenues of education, culture, social services, environment, science and technology. “In an attempt to showcase hidden talents of past Royalists, the first edition of ‘Sanjanana’ was held last year amidst the COVID pandemic,” said Methjaya Pathberiya, UNESCO Club President. “As such the first edition was presented virtually. It has been 15 years since the UNESCO Club was established and the Club has taken the lead to organize many activities to keep the school flag flying high. I appreciate the support extended by successive principals during my tenure as the UNESCO Club President. The ‘Sanjanana 2023’ concert brought the Nawarangahala back to life, ending its dormancy and it also provided an opportunity for students of Grade 7 to showcase their talents and creativity. I thank all teachers and parents for their support without which this event wouldn’t have been a success.” 

The chief guest for the event was Prof. Karunaratne Bandara, Professor of Aesthetic Studies at the University of Colombo. Prof. Sirimali Fernando, Secretary General of the Sri Lanka National Commission for UNESCO, the School Principal, past pupils of Royal College and many other dignitaries and parents were present.
