END VIOLENCE and ABUSE of Women and Children in all 25 Districts of Mother Lanka through the establishment of District Networks

A call to Activists, Journalists, Lawyers, Educationists, Community leaders and like-minded individuals and organizations to come together in your own Districts for a common cause: END VIOLENCE and ABUSE of Women and Children in our own district.
We refer to our article that appeared on April 5, 2021 and are pleased to announce that we are all set to launch into the districts.
We wish to clarify that the networks we propose to set up in all 25 Districts will complement the good work that is currently being carried out by the numerous state authorities including the Police.

At this point, we wish to both thank and congratulate the Minister for Public Security and the Inspector General of Police for appointing a lady Deputy Inspector General to head the Police Women and Children’s Bureau as this clearly indicates the commitment of the Police towards the safety of the women and children of Mother Lanka.

"A legacy of 2500 years of recorded civilization is meaningless if we, as a country, continue to allow the violence and abuse of a significant portion of our community to go unchecked and leave them to suffer alone and in silence"

We feel that this is an opportune time to create and launch District networks for a number of reasons; the primary one being that it seems that violence and abuse of both Women and Children are at an all-time high in our country with seven reported deaths of children owing to violence and abuse within the last 14 months.
The network will create wide-spread awareness among the people as to what services are available through its diverse stake holders and the state institutions in one’s own district, when there is a potential threat and also when a crime is committed and also thereafter. As a result, both victims and potential victims will know that they have some sort of recourse and won’t have to resort to desperate measures or suffer in silence.

Furthermore, the establishment of this network will make the public realize that they can and do have a role to play in reporting and preventing future incidents of violence and abuse. This will be a welcome change from the prevalent attitudes that both violence and abuse is something to be borne by and dealt with by the individuals involved, when in reality it is the responsibility of the community to ensure that all its members are able to enjoy lives free from harm.
The network will also provide visibility to the individuals and their respective organizations in the districts who have been tirelessly fighting to protect victims and also counter further instances of violence and abuse. This visibility will be provided for state run institutions and facilities.

While this visibility will acknowledge the good work done by these individuals and organizations including state run institutions and facilities, it will further reassure the communities that there is actual help available and will also deter individuals who perpetrate or have a penchant for violence and abuse.
A legacy of 2500 years of recorded civilization is meaningless if we, as a country, continue to allow the violence and abuse of a significant portion of our community to go unchecked and leave them to suffer alone and in silence.

"This will be a welcome change from the prevalent attitudes that both violence and abuse is something to be borne by and dealt with by the individuals involved, when in reality it is the responsibility of the community to ensure that all its members are able to enjoy lives free from harm"

So, let’s come together without further delay to build a Network to END Violence and Abuse women and children in our own district and be of service to this vulnerable group by making available the services of the diverse stake holders and the state in each district, so that they know that they are not alone but have the support of a committed group of individuals and organizations including state run institutions who have their interests at heart.
By signing up to the network in your District, you will be joining a community of like-minded people who are committed to End Violence and Abuse on Mother Lanka’s women and children in your own district. While this is a program is being initiated by Avanka Lanka, please be assured that - by joining your District Network - you will not be aligning yourself with us or the other organizations involved.

We are coming together for the common good and towards a common goal: by establishing District Networks to END VIOLENCE AND ABUSE of women and children in our own district, from systems and individuals who abuse them.
If we come together TODAY, we will be able to save a life from being ruined TOMORROW!
