A senior official of the Anuradhapura prison said that official duties of the prison had been obstructed since many prison officers have not reported to work after an inmate had been admitted to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital on suspicion of having contracted the Coronavirus.

The inmate had worked in Azerbaijan for a long period and had arrived in Sri Lanka via Dubai on February 17.

He is a resident of Devahuwa, Galkiriyagama and has been imprisoned due to his failure to pay a fine of Rs. 25,000 ordered to be paid by the Kekirawa court with regards to a motor vehicle case.

When inquired, Prison Superintendent, Rohana Galappaththi said that subsequent to the hospitalisation of the particular inmate, around 150 out of the 215 officers had not reported to work.
