Accident in Thalawa kills two

A trishaw had collided head-on with a private bus at Thalawa on the Anuradhapura – Peradeniya road in the early hours of last morning causing the death of two young men and serious injuries to two others.   

The deceased and the injured were the passengers on board the ill-fated trishaw The two young men Susanth Kumara (24) and Kavindu Madushan Pathmasiri (19) who died were residents of Eppawala area.   

The injured were admitted to Thalawa Divisional Hospital and transferred in critical condition to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital.   

Investigations revealed that the group of young men were on their way back after attending  the ‘Purawara Udanaya’ Poson festival celebrations in Anurahdhapura on Saturday night (22) while the private bus was transporting a group of passengers from Ratnapura area on a trip to Jaffna.   

Police said the driver had lost control of the trishaw due to excessive speed and collided with the bus. They said the trishaw had veered off to the right hand side of the road at the time of the accident and collided head-on with the oncoming bus.   

However, the driver of the private bus was taken into custody pending further investigations.   

Thalawa police are conducting further investigations.
