The April spring festival in Nuwara Eliya has been postponed for August in view of the prevailing threat of the COVID -19 pandemic.

Mayor Chandana Lal Karunaratne said despite all arrangements being made to hold the festival in April as usual, they were compelled to postpone all festivities in view of the prevailing threat of COVID-19. He said the municipal council would give priority to health programmes to protect the people from the Coronavirus. The mayor pointed out that he had taken steps to supply consumer goods at cheap prices to cater to the low income families in the area.

“Tourism and other sources of income in Nuwara Eliya town is on stand still. It is the duty of the municipal council to provide them concessions until the situation is back to normal. I am planning to recover only 50 percent of assessment taxes , water bills and trade licence fees. We consider it our duty to cooperate to assist in the government’s endeavour to bring the pandemic under control while maintaining essential services” The Mayor further said.
