Bakery Owners’ Assn. announce price reduction Loaf of Bread by Rs.5, other bakery items by 8%

Following the governments’ recent tax concession for VAT (15%) and NBT (2%) for the import of wheat flour, the Bakery Owners’ Association had decided to reduce the price of a 450g loaf of bread by Rs.5.00 with effect from midnight today. Speaking at a media briefing he requested all bakery owners to reduce prices of their bakery products according to the given tax concessions. Accordingly, a loaf of bread weighing 450g with a day expiry date would be reduced by Rs.5. A loaf of bread was priced at Rs. 60 and Rs.55. “We request bakery owners to reduce the prices of other products by eight per cent from the present margin prices,” he said.   

However, there would be no price reduction for special bread varieties such as sandwich bread, french bread and bagel etc, he said. “Palm oil had been used mainly for the bakery products and the price of Palm oil had been increased unusually to Rs.7,500 which was at Rs.5,000 a can. Before this government came to power, the bakery owners had to pay 17 per cent tax. Now we do not have to pay such tax,” he said. Therefore, we decided to grant that concession as a benefit to the consumers, he added.
