Agrarian Organisations in the Polonnaruwa District warned that Governent’s ban on import of synthetic fertiliser and agro chemicals would result in a severe shortage of food in the country.

President of the Parakrama Samudra Agrarian Organisation Jagath Aruna Kirithi told the media yesterday that the farmer organisations would be compelled to resort to stern action if the shortage of fertiliser affected the farmers. Representatives of Agrarian Organisation pointed out that the proposed ban had already created a shortage of fertiliser and that it would seriously affect agriculture in the country. They said the minimum yield in paddy per acre should be between 100 and 125 bags to bring any profit to the paddy cultivator but it would not be possible if the usual supply of fertiliser was reduced.

“ The government will be compelled to import rice to meet the requirements of the country. Every rice producing country uses fertiliser and agro chemicals. The Professors, Doctors and scholars who find fault with fertiliser and agro-chemicals have ignored the ill- effects of the use of liquor and smoking , vehicle emission, and even drugs used in the treatment of diseases that have side effects, detrimental to health. The proposed ban on fertiliser and agro chemicals will only result in a famine in the country” the representatives said. Representatives of Parakrama Samudra, Girithale, Minneriya and Kaudulla Agrarian Organisations in the Polonnaruwa District were present.
