The transporting of solid waste from Colombo to Aruwakkalu began on Tuesday, the Megapolis and Western Development Ministry said.
Sociologist Nimal Premathilaka of Ministry said that initially the waste of the Colombo Municipal Council area would be dispatched to this depository and load of ten waste carriers were deployed. “According to the planned process, waste is to be transported to Aruwakkalu by trains but till the work on the railway track is not completed, waste will be transported by waste carrier vehicles,” he said. The laying of track will be completed by March next year.
At the first stage, 600 tons of waste will be deposited daily at the Aruwakkalu dumping ground and this capacity has been planned to increase up to 1,200 tons.
