A 65-year-old spinster from Moratuwa who had fallen in love with a young man she befriended on Facebook had been cheated off Rs.370,000 which she had paid to clear a package of surprise gifts being sent by him.
The Moratuwa police are investigating her complaint. The woman has said that she had fallen in love with a handsome young man whom she had come to know through Facebook and credited Rs.370,000 to an account given by him to clear a gift package sent by him.
The man had sent her photos of the contents of a box which included a host of luxury goods including laptops, costly cellular phones, branded costumes, and cosmetics.
She told police that she heard nothing from him after sending him the money and that she decided to make a complaint to the police on the advice of a friend. A senior police official said the woman was searching for the missing man and not the money and that she was even prepared to give the man another one million if she could find him.
He said the complainant’s request to the police was to help her to find her lover. The Moratuwa police are investigating her complaint.
