Conservation of the Jethawana Cheithiya commences

The Department of Archaeology has taken steps to conserve the Jethawana Cheithiya in Anuradhapura, which has been left to the mercy of the jungle for a considerable period.  The Officer In Charge of the project said as an initiative the rapid growth of rank vegetation causing extensive damage to the Cheithiya built of bricks would be removed immediately. He said department had deployed a well trained team to carry out the maintenance work using sophisticated equipment.

   
According to tradition the sacred relics of the Buddha have been enshrined in the Jethawana Cheithiya which is about 232ft in height and 1132ft in circumference.
