Chief Sanghanayaka of the Southern Province Ven. Dr. Omalpe Sobitha Thera said the Government must depend only on veterans and specialists in the health sector and not on soothsayers, foretellers, astrologers and religious dignitaries to bring the CORONA pandemic under control.

He said the people of all communities and religious groups were susceptible to the deadly disease and that it was the duty of the authorities to implement the precautions as laid down by the health sector, regardless of communal or religious differences.

“Decisions should be taken in the interest of the public and not to meet the demands of religious dignitaries. It is a fact that a virus could spread through dead bodies. The authorities should take steps to destroy it with the body. The Government has put forward these controversial issues to divert the attention of the public from the present situation that has been aggravating,” the Thera said.   The Thera stressed the need to release the prisoners serving jail terms for minor offences and failure to pay fines, in order to ease the congestion in prisons and avoid the impending danger of spreading the pandemic in the prisons.
