While claiming that the screening process at the airport to detect coronavirus infected people was not sufficient, JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said yesterday the Government should adopt a mechanism with high-technological equipment to detect infected people entering the country through the airport.
He told a news conference that the screening process at the airport should be regularized.
“As an Island, it is easy to control viruses entering the country. What is important is to prevent virus infected patients entering the country via the airport. Most people are of the opinion that the screening process at the airport right now is insufficient. The government should give priority to introduce high-tech mechanism to detect infected patients entering the country,” he said.
Mr. Dissanayake said precautionary measures on the health officials who were involved should be strengthened.
“We have learnt that protective measures at the moment is not sufficient,” he said.
He said if the government had received information that there was a risk of fast spreading the virus, people should be provided with protective masks free
of cost.
“It is reported that there is a shortage of protective face masks and incidents of selling them at higher prices. Government should set a fixed price for face masks and should ensure their quality,” he said.
He said the government should act on recommendations of the experts and experienced professionals who have thorough knowledge in the subject to counter such epidemics.
