Daily wage of plantation workers Court of Appeal to hear petition filed by 20 companies

The Court of Appeal has decided to hear a petition filed by 20 plantation companies seeking the issuance of a writ order nullifying the Government’s Gazette notification declaring the daily minimum wage of tea and rubber plantation workers to be Rs. 1,000.  


The order was issued by a bench of Justices comprising Arjuna Obeysekera and Mayadunne Koraya.  


The Court of Appeal also directed that the hearing of the petition be held on May 05 and that notice be issued to the respondents named in the petition.  
Twenty plantation companies including Agarapathana Plantation Company and Elpitiya Plantation Company had field the above petition.  


Minister of Labour Nimal Siripala de Silva, Commissioner General of Labour Prabath Chandrakeerthi, Chairman of the Tea Industry Wages Board and 18 others have been named as respondents.  


Recently, the Government announced in a Gazette notification that the daily wage of tea and rubber plantation workers should be Rs. 1,000.
