The Ceylon Teachers’ Union said the standard of education in the North Central Province (NCP) marked a sharp drop and judging from the results of the GCE O/L results, it stood at ninth position in the country.

President of the Union Priyantha Fernando told the media yesterday in Anuradhapura the school education in the NCP had declined mainly due to the mismanagement and that it was evident from the results in previous years as well.

“The education sector in the province is facing a shortage of teachers and senior officials in addition to fraud and corruption. The shortage of teachers has increased to about 2000 by now.

North Central Province education departments should have 206 officers of the Education Administration Service. It has dropped to 69. Irregularities in the education offices in the province has seriously affected the school education. If the standard of education in the NCP was to be uplifted, the prevailing irregularities should be eliminated and action taken against the individuals responsible,” he further said.

He requested the Provincial Governor to focus attention on this issue and to take steps to streamline the affairs in the education sector in the province.

Anuradhapura District President of the Union Ishan Sanjeewa and District Organizer Prasanna Sirisena were present at the occasion.
