The distribution of vegetables through Divisional Secretariat’s under the new scheme introduced by the Presidential Task Force had commenced on Wednesday (8). Stocks of vegetables were delivered to the traders under the supervision of Divisional Secretaries for prices fixed by the respective Economic Centres.
However, when a stock of 26,000 kilos of vegetables were delivered at the Maho Divisional Secretariat the traders expressed dissatisfaction of the prices. They pointed out that they could have purchased vegetables for cheaper prices if they were allowed to deal direct with the Economic Centres and the farmers.

Divisional Secretary Wasantha Warnakulasuriya who took up the issue with the Economic Centre management was able to reduce the prices.

“The new mechanism has been implemented to save the people from the prevailing disastrous situation. Officials are abiding by the decisions of the government. However they are not conversant with trade activities. It is a new experience for them. I informed the Economic Centre to take over the stocks, if not avail them to the traders for reasonable prices. Now they have reduced the prices to Rs.5, 10, and 15. Any more issues affecting this scheme will be resolved” she said.
