Essential Food Commodities Importers and Traders’ Association (EFCITA) requested the government to reduce the tax by Rs.10 which is levied in the import of one kilogram of wheat flour and to grant approval for the import of wheat flour.

At present, Rs.38.50  was being levied as a tax for the import of wheat flour and hence, it should be reduced by Rs.10 according to their request.
The Association pointed out that one kilo of wheat flour could  be sold to the consumers, less than Rs.87 if the import duty was reduced.
The Association further pointed out that the increase of the price of flour was due to their whims and fancies and the monopoly could be  done away with if  approval was granted for the import of wheat flour.

Meanwhile, the government had focused its attention to grant approval to the importers

to import flour when  ‘Prima’ and ‘Serendib’ Companies were making arrangements to increase the price of flour by Rs.8.00 and 8.20 on two occasions recently.
