While welcoming the recent release of Khalida Zia from prison, President Ranil Wickremesinghe said if Sheikh Hasina had acted sooner, she might still be Prime Minister today.

“However, I am hopeful that peace and stability will soon return to Bangladesh,” he added.

Speaking at the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Summit 2024 held at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel yesterday (06), President Wickremesinghe addressed a range of pressing issues, including the current political climate in Bangladesh, global economic strains, and Sri Lanka’s environmental ambitions.

Addressing the gathering, President Wickremesinghe expressed concern over the ongoing turmoil in Bangladesh, a nation he described as being in a precarious state. “Let’s hope there’s tranquility in Bangladesh,” he urged. “While I don’t want to delve deeply into the politics of our friendly neighbour, the situation there was bound to erupt at some point. Despite Sheikh Hasina no longer being in power, I recall her critical support to us when we were in dire need of funds—she provided $200 million, which was a significant help. It’s only fair to acknowledge her contribution during such challenging times.”

The President also reflected on the broader global context, highlighting the financial and geopolitical strains affecting many nations. “Consider the resources that could have been better utilized,” he said. “Look at the funds Europe has allocated and the substantial expenditures by Russia. All this money could have been used more effectively. In addition, the situation in the Middle East, particularly with Iran potentially retaliating, poses risks that could have far-reaching impacts, including on Sri Lanka. The repercussions are severe and not something anyone would want to confront.”

Wickremesinghe also reassured the audience of Sri Lanka’s resilience amid global uncertainties. “We should not panic,” he stated. “As the largest investors in Bangladesh, we are crucial to job creation and economic stability there. While the global situation is challenging, Sri Lanka continues to navigate through these difficulties with determination.”
