An elephant calf which had fallen into a farm well at Karakolagaspitiya in Ethimale was rescued by the wildlife conservators with a great deal of effort. This was due to the constant presence of a cow elephant which was found to be  guarding it’s calf which had fallen into the well.

The enraged cow elephant had charged the backhoe and the DWC officials who were compelled to flee for their safety. Finally a team of conservators headed by the Uva Province Wildlife Surgeon Dr. Dharmakirthi had managed to tranquilise the cow elephant and proceed to extricate the calf from the well. The cow elephant and its calf were then driven away into the Yala National Park.
