The Department of Excise will closely monitor any violations to the Excise Ordinance, where the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages is prohibited countrywide on World Temperance Day today (3).

Excise chief M J Gunasiri told the Daily Mirror yesterday that special surveillance operations are in place to monitor violations and retailer liquor sellers who do not adhere to the Excise law.

He said Excise Commissioners and Assistant Commissioners countrywide have been given instructions to strictly enforce the law and bring culprits to book.

The Excise Commissioner General requested the public to alert any instances of breach of law through the hotline 1913.
