Fabricating evidence against former Senior DIG Vaas Gunawardene Shani Abeysekera, two others further remanded

Former Director of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Shani Abeysekara and two others who had been on remand on suspicion of fabricating evidence in the case against former Senior DIG Vaas Gunawardene, were further remanded till April 07 by Gampaha Chief Magistrate Manjula Karunaratne yesterday.   

The other two suspects were former SI of the Embilipitiya Police Mohana Mendis and retired SI Navaratne Preamatilleka.   

Prison officials told Court that the suspects would not be produced in Court in view of  possible danger  from the Coronavirus. They informed Court that the first suspect had been detained in the Welikada Prisons, the second  in the Mahara Prisons and the third in the Galle Prisons.   

The Magistrate ordered the Prison authorities to produce the suspects in Court on April 07,   

PC 92700 Samera making submissions for the State informed Court that the third suspect Navaratne Prematilleka’s statement was in the process of being recorded.
