Fordyce canal to be widened

Fordyce canal in Hatton that flows through Fordyce estate in Hatton and feeds the Castlereagh reservoir is to be widened under a project implemented by the Nuwara Eliya district Disaster Management Centre.   
Asst. Director of the Disaster Management Centre Ranjith Alahakoon said the Fordyce canal often overflowed creating a flood threat affecting the Hatton-Diagama road and the estate line houses.   

He said the canal would be widened upto 21ft under an environment friendly project under the supervison of the Ambagamuwa Divisional Secretary.   

The Asst Director further said that the National Gem and Jewellery Authority has permitted a civil society organisation in the Fordyce estate to carry out gem mining during the project.
