Former MP Reginald (Reggie) Perera passes away

Reginald (Reggie) Perera, a respected political leader from Wattala passed away recently.
Born on May 22, 1947, Reginald Perera was educated at St. Mary’s College, Mabole and St. Anthony’s College, Wattala .In 1983 he was elected Mayor of the Wattala- Mabole Urban Council through the United National Party. Faced with a council in disrepair, his leadership transformed it to proper functionality. His popularity was such that in 1987 the Wattala-Mabole U.C. was the only council in the country that elected a mayor uncontested.
In recognition of his accomplishments in local government, Reginald Perera was appointed to Parliament in 1989 on the UNP’s national list. His hard and exceptional work ensured his being appointed the UNP organizer for the Mahara electorate in 1990. Not choosing to be an appointed MP, he tested his popularity by contesting at the Parliamentary Election 1994 from Gampaha District and was elected to Parliament with 73,508 votes. 
A private funeral was held recently according to his last wish.
